The production began with the MGM sign projected on to the curtain in black and white with the Cowardly Lion giving us her best roar, which was a fabulous idea. The set and props were very good, especially the house which whirled around during the storm and was very effective. Likewise, costumes, hair and makeup were delightful and beautifully put together. There were times when some of the scene changes seemed a little clunky and unnecessary however, so it’s perhaps worth considering whether scenery and props could be kept to a minimum so that momentum isn’t lost. However all of the scene changes were well handled by the stage crew.
Dorothy Gale (Lauren) had a beautiful voice, perfectly highlighted in one of the most famous songs in musical theatre history, ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow,’ which was sublime. She really looked the part in her lovely blue dress and acted with confidence. A really enchanting performance, well done.
Hunk/Scarecrow (Alice) was a delight. Her characterisation as both Hunk and the Scarecrow was excellent and she performed with energy and commitment. Likewise, Hickory/The Tin Man (Alfie) performed well and had a lovely voice and an endearing quality. Lastly Zeke/ Cowardly Lion (Florie) was really well acted with a fun and characterful performance. These were a strong, confident set of principals who worked well together and all performed at their best. Very well done to you all.
Aunt Em/Glinda (Dora) gave a very considered performance but unfortunately some of her lines were sadly too quiet to be heard over the backing track. However, she had a serene quality that was just right for the kindly aunt and good fairy. Aunt Hen/ The Guard (Bethany) likewise gave a good performance.
Miss Gulch/ Wicked Witch (Alexa) had one of the best cackles I have heard! She acted the parts well but, again, we struggled to hear all of her lines over the backing track.
Professor Marvel/The Wizard of Oz (Leon) had excellent diction and volume and performed very well.
Toto (Ellie) was a triumph. She was onstage for long periods of time and behaved beautifully. Even being held by various cast members did not phase her. An excellent performance!
The ensemble performed well with good vocals and plenty of well-rehearsed dancing. Choreography by Steph was well organised and on the whole very good. It was brave to attempt ballet and tap as they are technically very demanding.
Creative and Musical Director Donna-Kate had worked hard to get the best out of the cast vocally, with strong harmonies and some beautiful singing. As mentioned, there were times when the backing track was a little loud but I’m sure the balance will have improved with subsequent performances. Likewise, she and co-Director Gary had directed the cast well to give some nice detailing and interest.
All in all, this was a charming and very enjoyable production. The young cast performed with energy and commitment and was much appreciated by the audience. Very well done.
