The Wizard of Oz is a musical based on the 1939 film of the same name, the story follows a young girl named Dorothy who is swept away in a tornado to a magical land and embarks on a quest to see the mysterious wizard who can help her return home.

Dorothy Gale played by Sophie Rogers did not try to emulate Judy Garland but brought her own particular talent to the role. Lovely voice and stage presence.

Aunt Em played by Melanie Colbeck-Jones. I liked the motherly overtones that Melanie brought to Auntie Em. Good diction, articulation and projection.

Uncle Henry/Emerald City Guard played by Derek Williams gave good character definition, I liked the scene when they arrive at The Emerald City and try to gain admission, good timing.

Scarecrow/Hunk played by Elis Myers-Sleight had zest and gave an endearing well defined and convincing characterisation that extended beyond the ‘footlights. His panic when facing fire was especially well acted.

Tin Man/Hickory played by Ewan Davies had a stiffness of movement which was believable and well maintained in his dance.

Cowardly Lion/Zeke played by Damon Miles. The part of the Cowardly Lion is a real joy for any actor and Damon grasped it with both hands displaying his many talents.

Wicked witch of the West/Miss Gultch played by Lauren butler was horrendously loveable as the Wicked Witch of the West and her cackle echoed through the theatre. This actress understood both the comic content and evil intentions.

Madam Marvel/The Wizard played by Deborah James who always gives a reliable performance. Two characters, both pretending to have powers they do not posses, Deborah got it just right, playing these mature roles sympathetically and with aplomb.

Glinda played by Sarah Knight gave an assured and warmly characterized performance and brought some of her own interpretation to this role.

The large group of children playing the Munchkins sang and moved well and those who had lines to say had very clear diction.

Choreographer Julie Griffiths had devised interesting routines, which suited the show and the cast. Music under the capable hands of Nathan Jones was well sung with good diction.  The musicians were well controlled and there was a good sound balance between instruments and voices. Costumes throughout were excellent and added a real sparkle to the production. Director Derek Williams had created a genuinely ‘feel good’ show and huge congratulations are in order.

There were some continuity issues with the production regarding the dog, basket and entry/exits points, however this did not take away from the production.

Congratulations Colstars
