I am sure most of the audience gathered will have seen the film version of this show but I know they were wowed by this production of the musical!
The company played to a full house and the audience were so very appreciative of the talent that was set before them of the stage. The company numbers were full of fun, with lovely choreography and great singing and energy. I was very impressed by the quality of the ensemble and they should duly feel proud of what they achieved.
The principals were well cast and mention must go to the three ‘witches’. Helen Morgan gave a great performance as Alexandra Spofford, Stephanie Knight was a wonderfully ‘prim’ Jane Smart and Naomi Davies a suitably ‘naughty’ Sukie Rougemont. Of course all three changed because of one man… Darryl Van Horne! Steven Paul McCarthy played this part very well and there was a little hint of the Jack Nicholson about him, but he also brought his own twist to the character. His comic timing was lovely as was his command of the stage. There were also some nice performances given by Ffion Baggridge as Jennifer Gabriel, Neil Perks as her father Clyde and Kyle James as her love interest Michael Spofford.
Two performers worthy of special mention for very different reasons were Amanda Fitzgibbon who gave an amazing performance as Felicia Gabriel, demonstrating a fine voice in a very difficult song and some incredible acting. Then there was the almost silent butler Fidel. David W. Davies was very entertaining as this put upon soul. His comic timing was perfect and the looks to audience priceless bringing the house down each time he was on, even in suspenders!
My congratulations to the entire company on a really enjoyable evening!
