The Wisdom of Eve, a short story by Mary Orr published in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1946, was the basis for the Broadway musical Applause and the Bette Davis film All About Eve. The story is told from the point of view of Margo’s best friend, Karen Roberts, who unknowingly abets an ambitious young actress in her goal of becoming a Broadway star at any cost.

Melanie McLeod as Karen Roberts the best friend of Margo. A well-controlled performance, brought her own unique interpretation to the character, capturing the right amount of attitude.

Victoria Walters as Eve Harrington an ambitious young actress showed a good character development, clear diction and the performance of the night. Her accent and demeanour did not falter.

Delyth Mai Lewis as Margo Crane an aging Broadway star with an acerbic tongue and an almost unflappable ego. Good diction, good stance and commanded the stage, strong performance.

Dai Williams as Clement Howell husband of Margo. A good performance, good diction and stage presence. A well executed performance.

Martyn Foster Lewis as Lloyd Roberts the playwright. A good performance, good delivery of dialogue, and  kept the character throughout the play

Minor roles were justly carried out by Steve Williams, Fiona Bishop, Iain Campbell, Phil Davies and Laura Hallas.

The decor, furnishings and props were well chosen and the lighting all added to the overall feel of the play.

A excellently directed production which produced some excellent moments of good theatre.  I loved this play, never heard of it but will be looking into it in more depth.

This was quite a brave choice of play in the current climate and I would urge you to continue to be bold in your choices and help to push boundaries in non professional.

Congratulation’s Hilltop Theatre Company.
