The audience settled down with their collection of picnics, drinks, chairs and rugs to watch the highly proficient Greek Theatre Players’ annual Shakespearean treat in the heart of the East London. The Winter’s Tale is a play of two contrasting halves; Act 1 predominantly tragedy and Act 2 with all the laughs. Being one of William’s later works, it has some of his best mature writing, providing poetic speeches for lyrical delivery by actors to show their verbal talents.
This production was rich with superb orators that did great justice to the Bard. All the lead players brought the words off the page and into the performance, showing superb interpretation of the soliloquies and dialogues.
The play was simply staged with little set, few props but traditional costumes. The actors were mainly alone with their audience, reliant on their skills and understanding of the text. Perhaps it is this that makes The Greek Players edgy, walking the wire between success and disappointment, calling upon the hours of learning and rehearsal to deliver a performance of excellence.
The Winter’s Tale is a wonderful play and this was another wonderful Greek Theatre Players performance.
