Carlton trimmed and adapted the text and cast their performers well to present the play in a scale readily accessible to a modern audience, sat on the unforgiving bench seats in the Studio. Some good performances were well received by your audience, the basic plot developments and emotional shifts were put across well and the rustic scenes were fun. Using a life size puppet to play Mamillius was an interesting solution to having a young child in the cast. A lighter touch in the first half would have created a less marked contrast with the second and given more balance. In the studio setting, the closeness of the audience was dealt with better by some than others, but it did give an immediacy and an intimate feel.
