The book is by Julian Fellows and music by George Stiles, Lyrics by Anthony Drewe, based on the book by Kenneth Grahame all make for a great production by Southampton Operatic Society. The set is very good; I liked the small boat and horse cart, all simple and effective making for quick changes. Lighting and sound were also just right. I had not seen this musical before so was looking forward to seeing it. The audience and I were in for a treat.

Director Rachel Pike assisted & Choreography was by Susie Maycock - they have a strong cast with this production. The dancing was very slick, and suited everyone’s ability. The costumes had been well thought out, you could tell straight away the different family groupings, and I loved the hedgehogs.

Nigel Finch has also worked hard with the music, as its not a well known score. The orchestra worked well. The company have strong singers, I liked the opening number ‘Spring’ led by Portia the Otter played by Amy Marsden, it was just a lovely start. Another favorite was ‘A Friend Is Still a Friend’ sung by Badger, Rat & Mole with beautiful harmonies.

Richard Peaty takes the role of Toad, he has loads of energy as he bursts onto the stage. Russell Dutton is strong as Ratty, Mike Pavitt is perfect as Badger they all work well together and the singing is right for the different voices. Add Matthew Pike who is super as Mole with his mole like characteristics you have the right group of principals. They keep their characters till the end.

Victoria Sandford played Mrs Otter and Peter Lavery was great as Chief Weasel. There are lots of smaller parts for the company to play so everyone could shine in their own way. You could tell they were having a great time which came across, lots of hard work I’m sure.

Well done to you all.
