A new group to Noda, Redlynch is a Village in the New Forest National Park on the border of Wiltshire and Hampshire. During my research to find their location I had discovered that the production of “The Wind in the Willows” was sold out so I was eagerly looking forward to seeing it. The location is only a small Village Hall but I was surprised to discover raked seat seating, the small stage was open and the set was dressed to create a very nice woodland atmosphere with a projected back cloth that seemed to create a wonderful 3 D effect.
Without a doubt Mole, Ratty, Badger and Toad were all outstanding, with wonderful characterisation and seemingly faultless performances. The rest of the small company playing a multitude of minor roles each, which all were performed to a very high standard.
I was surprised that the play had songs added, but the singing was very good and the simple backing made a good sound. I thought that the carol singing scene at the end of the first act was very impressive.
Because the hall has only a small stage the majority of the action took place on the floor in front of the stage. Several times the action was a little too close to the front row which made it difficult to see the performers from further back on the raked seating. I did feel that at times that it was a little slow and laboured, but perhaps the scene changes contributed towards this.
Overall I was very impress with this production, although they are only a small community group, they set their standards very high and they are obviously very well appreciated by their audiences. I look forward to the next time.
