Set in a small bar in rural Ireland, three local men settle in for a typical evening of drinks and conversation. The atmosphere changes when their friend Finbar arrives with Valerie, a woman from Dublin who has just moved into an old, supposedly haunted house. As the night progresses and the drinks flow, the men begin sharing ghostly tales from the town’s past. What starts as light-hearted storytelling takes a chilling turn when Valerie reveals a haunting experience of her own.

This production beautifully captured the play’s blend of folklore, humour, and quiet melancholy. The performances were natural and engaging, drawing the audience into the characters’ lives and unspoken regrets. The intimate setting and atmospheric staging heightened the sense of isolation and longing at the heart of the story.

Rob delivered a compelling performance as Jack, the cantankerous yet lovable Irish mechanic whose larger-than-life presence fills the stage. With sharp teasing and self-deprecating humour, Rob effortlessly embodies the aging bachelor, leading the group with a mix of charm and authority. Beneath the jokes and bluster, he skilfully reveals Jack’s loneliness and the quiet regrets that haunt him, making his final moments all the more poignant. Balancing humour and heartbreak, brings depth and authenticity to the role.

Adam delivered a heartfelt performance as Brendan, the generous and understanding Irish barman who quietly anchored the group. As a local bachelor, Brendan was friendly and easy-going, always ensuring his patrons were comfortable while subtly observing the dynamics around him. Adam brought an empathetic warmth to the role, making Brendan’s kindness feel genuine and effortless. His performance added a steady, grounding presence to the play, highlighting the character’s generosity and quiet strength. It was a nuanced and understated portrayal that enhanced the ensemble beautifully.

Will gave a thoughtful performance as Jim, the soft-spoken Irish local whose insecurities shaped his character. As a bachelor, Jim’s vulnerability was evident, yet Will effectively balanced this with his quick-witted intelligence, bringing a layer of complexity to the role. His portrayal of Jim’s underlying kindness added warmth to the character, and his quiet, hesitant nature drew the audience into his personal conflicts. Will’s performance brought depth and authenticity to Jim, making his journey both engaging and impactful.

Philip gave a lively performance as Finbar, the married, boasting Irish local with a proud and flirtatious nature. His teasing demeanour was balanced by a sensitivity that added depth to the character. As a wealthy and friendly figure in the group, Finbar’s larger-than-life personality came across with ease, yet Philip also adeptly showed the complexity beneath his confident exterior. His ability to shift between playful banter and moments of vulnerability made Finbar a memorable character, and Philip’s performance brought a delightful energy to the production.

Sarah gave a deeply moving performance as Valerie, the polite and friendly woman who carries the weight of her past. Her portrayal of Valerie’s sadness and haunting presence was subtle yet powerful, drawing the audience into her wounded and traumatized character. Sarah masterfully conveyed the emotional depth of Valerie, balancing her polite exterior with the pain and trauma that lie beneath. Her performance added a profound layer to the production, leaving a lasting impression of both vulnerability and strength.

Each actor was fantastic in their individual roles, but as a group of five, they were absolutely incredible. The chemistry between them was effortless, making their performances truly come alive. The Irish accents were wonderfully authentic throughout, with a special mention to Sarah for delivering an incredibly genuine Irish accent.

I loved the ‘fly on the wall’ feel of an evening in an Irish bar - every moment felt natural and immersive. The audience was captivated, hanging on every word, and with so many words to follow, it’s a testament to the cast’s skill that the delivery was so exceptional. Well done to all of you for bringing such depth and authenticity to this performance.

The staging, lighting, sound, and costumes were all absolutely spot on and perfectly captured the essence of the play. Every element felt thoughtfully designed, creating an immersive atmosphere that transported the audience to a small Irish bar. The attention to detail in the props was also impressive, adding a layer of authenticity to the setting that further enhanced the experience.

Dennis, the director, did a wonderful job in every aspect of bringing this production together. His direction brought out the best in the cast, ensuring the pacing, tone, and emotional depth were spot on. The seamless integration of all these elements made the play feel cohesive and expertly crafted. It was clear that a lot of care went into creating a truly memorable experience for the audience.

Thank you for inviting me to this fantastic performance. We had a lovely evening and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a pleasure to witness such a well-executed production.
