The Wedding singer is based on the 1998 romantic comedy film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Adapted into an hilarious feel good musical, this show gives a company the opportunity to exploit talent of all ages from a rapping granny, Rosie (Lisa Perry) to its juvenile leads and toe tapping chorus. The production team of Jon Mason Coombs, Emma Arscott and Lois Banks certainly pulled out off a lively interpretation of this piece with colourful costumes , imaginative choreography and musicality that rates amongst the best I have experienced in my visits to region 4 companies.
The principal singing of Michael Bennett, Rebecca Davies and Lois banks was great and the comedy timing of John Broomfield as George was first class.
The company are renowned for their sets, however on this occasion the set was a little bare albeit practical for this type of show. Some more dazzle and sparkle to reflect the era and show type would have lifted the stage.
That being said BillBoard Ensamble pulled off a first class production with a well deserved standing ovation on the night I attended. It is exciting to see thier future show choices of Shout and Legally Blonde, being perfectly set up to deliver the newer modern musicals that are starting to become available. Well Done BillBoard!
