Thank you for the kind invitation to review your theatre supper production of “The 39 Steps. It is always nice to sit with other audience members around a table to chat about the play whilst enjoying a meal together, and what a show it was!
The 39 Steps is a clever parody adapted by Patrick Barlow, of John Buchan’s 1915 novel is written for just four actors. It is a very challenging play to put on, and tonight’s performance was a wonderful opportunity to showcase both the skills of the director and the talents of these four actors.
Director John had created a fast-paced, humorous and very entertaining piece of theatre which grabbed the audience’s attention from the off. He had clearly worked with this talented cast to develop their characters, and although there were very many high-speed changes of character and lots of movement, the clever (if somewhat improbable) storyline still shone through, was engaging and easy to follow. His staging was superb with well contrived entrances and exits and very clever use of the set pieces. The four actors were extraordinary, each playing their parts with great skill, characterisation, and very clever comic timing. All in all this was a tremendous production and one to be proud of.
