The loyal Greek Theatre Players’ audience gathered for their annual Shakespearean treat outdoors in the Walthamstow arena. With a boisterous flock of parakeets insisting on being heard and the timely visit of an urban fox, we knew we were sharing this play with the locals, who all added to the experience.
This production boasted three directors Lindsey Sculfor, Liz Wheatley and Sarah Jones. It was clear that their collaboration worked well, with roles established and lots of communication between them. From an audience’s point of view the three directed as one, with no sense of differing or conflicting styles and outcomes
Kumba Hutt made the change from Prospero to female Prospera, seamless and natural. Her presence around the circle was captivating and she brought the gravitas that the part required. Danielle Capretti gave a captivating performance as Ariel. With the grace and finesse of a trained dancer, Danielle’s movement was enchanting and provided the spirit of Ariel throughout. Her butterfly wings, that filled on the breeze, worked beautifully and seemed to be part of Ariel rather than just an added costume
The large ensemble of actors worked well together as they explored the island and played out the story. This year’s production of The Tempest maintained the high standards set by The Greek Players. The story was well told through many fine performances and some creative direction. A magical summer’s evening.
