I was really intrigued and looking forward to my trip to Bikini Bottom. I was excited to meet all the characters in this musical based on SpongeBob the popular animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg with songs by various artists. It was great to see something new and fresh, PMA Theatre are always ready for something new and they certainly rose up to the challenge with this piece. This was part of their 10th Anniversary and the choice of SpongeBob proved to be a popular choice. There was a total of 24 scenes, 12 in each Act, many being Bikini Bottom, but transition from one scene to the next was smooth with no pauses, so we all dived in for this underwater sea experience. The question on everyone’s mind was could Bikini Bottom be saved from being wiped out by a volcanic eruption? SpongeBob and his mates to the rescue!!.

Alysia Dyke in the title role of SpongeBob Squarepants gave a phenomenal portrayal of this popular character. It is really a long time since I have seen such an energetic performance. It was evident Alysia had studied the role, including all the differing facial expressions and mannerisms which were part of her success. Being on stage throughout the performance, Alysia carried off all her tasks with aplomb and led the company in many musical numbers including a rousing opening ‘Bikini Bottom Day’ and ‘Best Day Ever’ Talented Sam Highcock was spot on with his role as Patrick Star, “BFF”- (Best Friends Forever with SpongeBob). Fran Cottingham puts every effort into any role she tackles and with her interpretation of Sandy Cheeks Squirrel this was no exception. Her professional approach, stood her in good stead as her scientific mind worked out every detail of the oncoming avalanche. Her mature voice was no effort in the musical tasks particularly with the duet with SpongeBob ‘Chop to the Top’ in Act 2.

There were many creditable performances from the large cast consisting of more than 40 players. Some of the cast played more than one character. Ellis Morey was believable as Squidward. Jo Greenhalgh as Plankton, together with her partner in crime Natalie Allpress as Karen the Computer worked hard to ‘dampen’ the situation.

Owain Allpress revelled in his portrayal of Mr Krabbs whilst Jamie Ash hit all the right notes as Pearl. John Haydon managed 3 different roles, each one carried off confidently. Nice contributions from Donna Greenfield as Mayor of Bikini Bottom and Jemima Jackson as Mrs Puff. The auditorium rang with Pirates, Sardines, Sea Anemones and Townsfish whilst Ruth Jones took the role of Pirate Patchy with ease. There were in fact loads of minor roles all well executed.

All chorus numbers were well choreographed, everyone on stage knew their tasks. Praise to Stage crew together with the stunning Wardrobe, who worked tirelessly throughout. Lighting and sound were ‘spot on’ which was just perfect.

An unusual piece which I hadn’t seen before, which was very appealing to youngsters and adults alike. Thank you P.M.A. for being so enterprising in your choice of production. Congratulations all, I loved every minute.
