Due to theatre closures the hills were nearly silent and Taunton could easily have lost out on yet another theatrical offering, but unperturbed TAOS soldiered on venturing out of town to the Tacchi Morris. Taunton Operatic took a stately stroll through Salzburg and up into the Alps, with a bevy of pious nuns and a set of well drilled children. A maternal Mother Abbess over saw the proceedings of a pretty Maria’s progress from postulant to Baroness. Maria moved around the stage with confidence and was well matched with her Captain, although his transformation from brittle to loving father was less evident than the usual portrayal. Uncle Max and Elsa had good comic timing and made the scenes move with more pace and vitality. The set although reduced from the original concept due to stage size restrictions was pleasing, although rather cumbersome to manoeuvre from the backstage noise that could be heard in quieter moments. Lighting and sound was used to good effect. It is always extremely annoying and difficult when original concepts need to be changed at the last minute, TAOS met these challenges and the audience were appreciative of their hard work and courage, a good offering even in the face of adversity.
