Best loved musical of millions came to the Borough Theatre in April to great acclaim. Everything hinges on the central role and Helen O Sullivan as Maria made this a natural delight, singing and acting, her skilful stagecraft apparent throughout every scene.
Her energised opening scene on the mountain set the stage alight.
A moving scene of the Nuns Chants at Nonnberg Abbey with Rita Rouse who brought total reality to Mother Superior, supported by Debbie Harrington Sister Sophia, Sue Price Sister Margaretta, and Brenda Maloney as Sister Bertha bringing humour and pathos.
A wonderful rendition of the iconic showstopper Climb Every Mountain from Rita Rouse
Patrick Callaghan gave an excellent performance of Captain Von Trapp. His rich voice filled the theatre for his performance of Edelweiss with the children and Maria. Effective light and shade sincerity was given to his scenes with Maria and Elsa Schraeder well played by the elegant Suzanne Meates.
All the children gave star performances Lisl, Megan,Trinder, Freidrik, Miles Harding, Louisa, Molly Brcikley Clark, Kurt, Brandon Jones Marta, Amy Price Brigitta, Carys Davies and the adorable Gretl Anni Rees.
Imposing Peter Bourne played Butler Franz to perfection and exceptional Peter Winter as Max Detweiler, a totally convincing characterisation. Notable cameo Nazi Herr Zeller, John Benjamin. One to watch, Alex Williams gave a sensitive portrayal of Rolf Gruber and Frau Schmidt was given natural reality by Jane Griffiths
Musically diverse with every emotion range, the cast relished this score enthusiastically.
Meryl Herbert created fine costumes.
Congratulations Director Stephen Clark Musical Director Sarah Fowler, and all the team.
