This show could never be associated with a myriad of choreography, but the opportunity to incorporate it was successfully utilised to the utmost and performed with control and finesse. ‘So Long, Farewell’ exhibited some of the best choreography in the show, with a variant of the usual movement seen many times before in other productions, the children moved with ‘crispness’ and discipline, this was a delight and much enjoyed as was the charming Landler, danced by Maria and Kurt. I was also impressed with how the costumes flattered and enhanced the characters. Elsa looked extremely elegant at all times, visually; she looked every inch a Baroness in waiting! Sound has had a poor reputation in the south west recently with several R.R’s complaining of the low quality. I have found this on occasion in my district but not in this production. On the whole sound was balanced and clear with just a few niggles. Using the auditorium can create extra demands on lighting design. To all intent and purpose all was covered adequately. The audience was able to see all the action on stage and off clearly, with subtle effects successfully creating the ‘feeling’ of the action, as displayed during the Captain and children’s rendition of ‘The Sound of Music’ and the wedding scene in particular. Regardless of any issues within this production, it had a tremendous amount of charm with many enjoyable moments. Well done all.
