Wakefield West Riding Theatre Company's decision to produce The Sound of Music for their first show following the pandemic shut down as they know that Wakefield audiences love it and always give great support.

The cast was as strong as ever in all  roles Grace English as Maria was outstanding in both her acting and singing a lovely performance to watch and enjoy. Ian Fryer as Captain Von Trapp has played with W.W.R.T.C. on a number of previous occasions gave a well studied performance in a rather difficult role. I felt he was more at home as the loving father than the harsh whistle blowing naval captain. Rachel Hirst Marshall (Mother Abbess) has reprised this part a number of times in the past and is always sure to give a brilliant performance both singing and acting. David Hookham (Max Detweiler) has played many character roles with various societies in the local area but this is a first as Max Detweiler I am sure he was delighted to play the very lovable but very wiley Uncle Max. The excellent cast of main principles was completed by Haley Harris (Elsa Schraeder) as the Austrian aristocrat friend of Von Trapp she was most suitable for the role and acted with great style and confidence. The three main sisters Kati Gill (Sister Margaretta) Claire Hookham Williams (Sister Berthe) and Ashleigh Harrison (Sister Sophia) and Georgia Collins (Liesl) the older daughter of Von Trapp sung danced and acted with complete ease on stage and was well partnered by Josef Summerscales (Rolf Gruber). On the Friday eveningperformance it was the Roses team of children who all sung danced and acted in great style and I am sure the Rainbow team were just as good. The chorus singing of the nuns on the four occasions they get on in this show was of a very high standard as were all the remaining principles and all the support teams did much to enhance the production but I did notice on some occasions that the costumes & lib did not quite match up but well done to all concerned good to see you back.
