This was a very slick production with non obtrusive scene changes. The orchestra was excellent and very sympathetic to the performers and there was some very good singing from both principals and chorus. Maria sang beautifully and had the warmth, enthusiasm and at times outspokenness that one associates with the character. Her scenes with the children were delightful and her confusion as she fell in love with the captain was quite moving, there was a lovely naive quality about her. Remember if you are playing a guitar the left hand needs to move as well. All the children (The younger- team Roses) sang and acted very well, at times suitably obedient, impish and of course lovable. The nun’s chorus singing was good, but needed a little more light and shade. Climb Every Mountain was very well and convincingly sung with passion, but it was a shame that a backcloth was brought in at the end as it was very distracting to what was an excellent performance. Characterisations were mainly very good. The Sixteen going on Seventeen scene was tender and well choreographed, but more love needed to have been shown to give a greater credibility to the end when Rolf is hesitating to give the family away. In the ball scene the animosity between the pro-German and anti German camps was not really apparent. The sets were lovely and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
