The Sorcerer was the third collaboration of Gilbert and Siullivan, a comic opera based on a Christmas story "An Elixir of Love", it was first performed 27 November 1877, perhaps not so well known as some of their later productions but truly loved by all traditional Gilbert and Sullivan fans.
Quite a funny story of love potions and spells cast by "The Sorcerer" Mr John Wellington Wells, he cast a spell on all the villagers through tea he poured form a teapot. The whole village falls asleep and as soon as they awake they fall in love with the first person of the opposite sex they set eyes on. Chaos ensues and the only way the spell can be broken and order restored is by the sacrifice of either Alexis or the Sorcerer.
A delightful basic set which worked extremely well and left lots of room on the stage for the cast to move around easily. An excellent Orchestra never intrusive, along with good lighting and beautiful costumes set the scene for a superb evenings entertainment.
A wealth of talent lead by Aline, (Rowena Thornton) and Alexis (Leon Waksberg) each complimenting the other perfectly. Excellent characterisations from Dr Daly the Viicar of Ploverleigh, (Peter Skelton) and Mrs Parlet, a Pew Opener, (Patricia Brennan), comedy abounded from A Notary, (Trevor Roberts) and Constance (Anna Trent). Lovely singing as always from Penny Mcgoverin as Lady Sangazure, and completeting the line up of principals John Wellington Wells the Sorcerer himself (John Tattersall) and Sir Marmaduke, Stuart Summerscales.
Equally matched by a good strong singing chorus made this a show to be proud of. Congratulations.
