Mary Portalska’s script of Snow Queen brought a fresh pantomime to Holyport Memorial Hall with an excellent production from Maidenhead Drama Guild. It creates a collection of fun characters who combine to defeat Frostina with two excellent running gags about the music of Frozen not being used and about the Mayor not likely to turn up in the new location. It is also full of good jokes and some classic Pantomime comic business with a good chocolate pun run, a fresh take on the Ghost scene and even a Panto horse.
The Village hall was very well dressed for Christmas with the front of the stage covered in blue tinsel and snowflakes setting the tone for the show. The multiple scene changes were achieved with some very well-chosen projected images and the physical elements set with a good underscore to cover the delay. There were good musical choices on backing tracks including “We built this City”, “Count on me”, “Eye of the Tiger”, “Something about the night”, and “I gotta a feeling”.
The whole cast (surprisingly with few returning from the panto a year ago) delivered the comedy and the music with good timing and charm, strong characterisations, and a genuine sense of enjoyment with several younger performers really shining as talents with great potential..This was a first-class amateur show with a very good script, good music choices, wonderful costumes and make up and a talented cast creating a very pleasing and enjoyable show which made a fresh change to Pantomime Titles while staying true to many of its traditions.
