The LADS centenary season was brought to its end with JB Priestley’s 1930s England. This much-admired writer brings wit, satire and emotional depth to his plays, much of which is relevant today.
The Roundabout is a tricky play with a lot of dialogue and little action to support it. The pace was excellent however and Director, Cathy Naylor, did a terrific job in making interesting pictures with the positioning of the cast and bringing variety whenever possible.
The set had a glorious regency style to it with rich blue wallpaper and complementing painted woodwork, providing an air of luxury for this English manor house. Likewise, the furnishings, furniture, thick rugs and fine upholstered chairs were all in keeping with the period style. LADS do detail very well and with fabulous costumes and props that were just right, this attention was in evidence once again.
A strong cast held the audience’s attention and brought the play to life. Why the title, The Roundabout? It’s not obvious but Priestley would have had a good reason.
