This was an absolutely first rate professional standard performance from everyone concerned, from all the Principals and the many smaller Principal roles, through every single member of the chorus. Costumes, wigs and shoes were all correct, instantly changed however many times, with all the appropriate accessories for the period. Produced rather like a ‘Carry On New York Producers’ show the audience were entertained from the moment the curtain went up and truly showed their appreciation with a large number giving a standing ovation at the final curtain.
Nicholas Carroll and Michael Riley as ‘Max’ & ‘Leo’ completely held the show throughout with all their highs and lows. Anna Clarke, the beautiful, romantic interest ‘Ulla’, Simon Carroll as the outrageous comedic 'Franz Leibkind' and Simon Field and Ian Mottram as the outstandingly camp ‘Roger de Bris’ and his Valet ‘Carmen Ghia’ completed the main characters in the cast.
I can see why a number of people warned me ‘I might not like it’ – the story has a very New York type of humour but with a production, choreography and cast as good as this one I couldn’t fail to enjoy every moment that was happening on stage. My one criticism, the same as most years, was that the sound was set rather too high for enjoyment, I like to ‘listen’ to a show rather than have it forced down my ears.
