This was a most impressive and well crafted production. The opening scene started with lots of nautical business taking place, on a striking colourful set. Lots of hard work went into this production to make it fun, with loads of comical interludes throughout the performance. A well chosen cast of principals headed a good strong chorus.
A dashing Pirate King (Ashley Davis) led the band of infamous Pirates, the beautiful Mabel (Laura Crowther) enthralled the audience with her lovely singing voice. Frederic (Richard Armstrong) was in good voice and an excellent partner for Mabel. Quality acting, throwing herself at Federic, with good singing, came from Ruth (Sue Morris).
The giddy daughters of the Major General supplied oodles of laughter, especially Edith chasing her Pirate King. The Major-General Stanley (Steve Convey) gave an impressive performance.
In the second act the Police Sergeant (Peter McDonnell) led a bunch of dippy police ladies "WPC'S" in disguise, perfectly acceptable, and well-choreographed.
There were several small cameo parts all well played, I must admit it is the first time I have ever seen a visit from Queen Victorias, usually you just get a portrait. Good thinking!
A delightful rendition of "Hail Poetry" and a sympathetic orchestra all helped to enhance this production.
