The stage at The Lichfield Garrick was a wash with flashing swords, prancing policemen and an apprentice who was not quite sure which side he was on. This production had all the hallmarks of another hit for this company. Nick Lawrence as Frederic and Vickie Belcher as Mabel lead the company well. With great support from Pete Beck and Mark Skett as the Pirate King and the wonderful Major General. Paula Waldron gave it her all as Ruth. I really enjoyed the small touches that Sally Baxter brought to this show like the pirate carrying his teddy bear everywhere with him and the one hanging out the washing on the front of the ship. The choreography was wonderful. Lots of movement, and all together. Sheila Pearson kept the orchestra under control and just at the right level so every word could be heard. Costumes were bright and the set a joy to look at. This Broadway version makes a welcome change from the long established G & S we are all so familiar with, Well-done Sutton Coldfield MTC.
