Gilbert and Sullivan was an excellent choice for Saundersfoot Footlights who were performing for the first time in the newly refurbished Regency Hall which unfortunately has a very small stage. A set for each of the two acts dispensed with the problem of multi scene changing in limited space.
Gareth Morris took all in his stride with his portrayal of one of his favourite roles - Pirate King, whilst new comer Mark Drakeford gave us a confident Frederic. Zara Colley in her first lead role with the company gave us a solid performance as Mabel, and gelled well with Frederic in their duets. Bethan Griffiths, Kennedy Peters and Helen John never fail to please in their performances and maintained a very high standard as Edith, Kate and Isabelle respectively. The role of Major General Stanley was in the hands of Teifion Powell _ a superb performance, his confidence being evident throughout, his delivery of “I am the very model of a modern Major General” being the highlight. Stunning performance from Andrea Thomas as Ruth, one could tell she was really enjoying this role which she took command of right from her first entrance. Ollie Cole as Samuel gave a very convincing performance. The sergeant of police was played with great conviction, comedy and facial expression by the “larger than life” stalwart of the society Roger Leese. Full marks to the enthusiastic chorus, although small in number was not quiet in volume. A beautifully dressed show, much attention paid to detail with all the appropriate hairstyles .Interesting sets are also a feature of this company The band under the baton of Clive Raymond created a good sound and kept the musical numbers flowing just as they should be. Congratulations to the Director David Jones and to the Choreographer Kate Williams for bringing this well loved interpretation to fruition.
Many thanks for the welcome afforded to both myself and to Brian Sullivan the Regional Councillor.
Looking forward to your end of year panto.
