This year is the 50th anniversary of the Swindon Gilbert and Sullivan Society. The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most popular of Gilbert and Sullivan's many collaborations. I have to say that it is also my favourite and one of the best productions I have seen from this society.
Producer and stage director Derek Hill and choreographer Stephanie Walsh managed their large cast, on the small Arts centre stage, so that it never seemed too overcrowded. A good, small orchestra under the direction of MD Richard Abrams; although in full view, were not obtrusive or too loud.
This time out the chorus were well rehearsed and sang the difficult numbers extremely well. Where all the men appear from for Gilbert and Sullivan productions is always an enigma to me. Well done gents. As always, the principle players were strong in their characters. Special mention to Stephanie Walsh, as Ruth and Robert Felstead, as the Pirate King: excellent performances from both. Graham Davidson-Smith managed to help carry Act 2 with his portrayal of the Sergeant of Police.
Scenery was minimal. However, with the excellent costumes, lighting and sound it was enough to set the scene. Congratulations on 50 years of productions and on a job well done from all concerned. An enjoyable evening was had by all I'm sure. Ros Hollands.
