One can always tell a lot about a performance if one goes to see it on opening night. My reaction is always either “this will work” or “this should stop right here!”. Seeing this lively, colourful, comedic and charming production on its first night led me straight to my “this will work” reaction.
My first comments must be directed towards the ensemble who worked incredibly hard throughout the performance. They were well focused, sang confidently and never let their energy levels drop. For me, the commitment of the ensemble really made the performance.
The principals did a fine job in their turn and entertained the audience beautifully. Cerian Forrest gave a good performance in the role of Mabel and launched herself rather enthusiastically at the top E flats dotted around the score. Nick Packer was a suitably earnest and wide-eyed Frederic and played the part well but on occasion had an ‘American-twang’ in the songs which at times was a little too Broadway musical theatre and not enough British operetta. Ken Thomas was a very well polished Major General and Michael Aubin gave great enthusiasm, coupled with a hint of ‘Depp-esque’ dizziness and sex appeal, in his portrayal of The Pirate King. Catherine Fraser gave her Ruth the right amount of matronly comedy and Christopher Peters-Bond effervescence as the Police Sergeant was infectious.
Well done one and all and I look forward to your next production.
