Milford, totally immersed in both stage and music, asked much of this youth company who rose to the challenge. Jessica Teague played Madame Giry - Ballet Mistress to a T.  Featured dancers executed their ballet beautifully, as did Alexandra Dick (Meg Giry) who also revealed a lovely singing voice. Monsieurs Andre and Firmin (Rory McCollum and Boyd Rodgers) came into their own as part of the “Notes” contrapuntal pieces, sung with Mme Giry, Carlotta, Piangi, Meg, Christine and Raoul. These were well rehearsed and tight. Ryan McNally and Hannah Conlon took the roles of Piangi and Carlotta, with wry comedy. As Opera singer Hannah showed her strong soprano voice. Connor Carson played Raoul with confidence, displaying vocal excellence with “All I Ask of You”. Chief plaudits go to Bronagh Walsh as Christine and David McCrossan as The Phantom. Bronagh’s voice was beautiful with perfect top notes; her acting totally engaging. David’s portrayal of the Phantom was a stand-out performance, vocally assured singing  “The Music of the Night” and the title piece. More minor named roles were well cast and the ensemble of over 50 voices harmonised well.

Choreography by Rebecca was first-class, both ballet and company numbers such as “Masquerade”.

Costumes were authentic - I particularly loved the masquerade ball. Lighting was atmospheric with good smoke machine use, and Sound successfully used echo and extra amplification for the Phantom. The Set and Props were effective – especially the underground lair. Ian’s 13-piece orchestra was well-controlled; particular praise to keyboard player Matthew, who produced sounds of tinkling music-box to pipe-organ with skill.
