Deformed at birth a bitter man known only as the Phantom lives in the sewers beneath the Paris Opera House, he falls in love with one of the chorus girls called Christine who he tutors privately. The Phantom terrorising the rest of the cast demands that Christine be given the lead in the Opera. The fascinating music we all love to listen to is of course written by Andrew Lloyd-Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. It is based on the novel "Le Fantome de Opera" by Gaston Leroux.
The Phantom, (Jordan Wright) with Sophie Hardhill as Christine Daae, gave a gripping, unbelieveable performance in both singing and acting, they were absolutely outstanding in their roles. Raoul, (James Preston) had an excellent voice and was a perfect foil to Christine, along with his two associates Monsieur Firmin and Monsieur Andre, (Lyndan Barclay, Ben Maltas) who both delivered good chacterisiations. Carlotta and Piangi , (Anya Carragher, Dominic Vickers) sang delightfully in their difficult roles. All other smaller characters too numerous to mention were well cast and added to the great enthusiasm to the overall production.
The Orchestra accompanied the singers and did not overpower them, brilliant lighting throughout the show, and the scene changes and props were moved swiftly and quietly.
It was hard to believe these performers were Juniors, this was an ambitious and challenging production, but beautifully done with panache! Sincere congratulations.
