Lilies on the Land
Shinfield Players Theatre, SPT
The extremely clever concept of setting the production in ‘E-ling’ Studios in the 40s threw fresh light on this old favourite, and allowed the full humour of Gilbert’s jokes to come out with very few changes to the original libretto, much enjoyed by all the members of the audience. It was good to see the Questors thrust stage used well, with some careful plotting to allow people to sing across rather than upstage. All the performers worked beautifully hard for dialogue to be heard and enjoyed, even when they were speaking upstage.
