The theatre is an amazing place where there is magic. At ‘get in’ an empty space then in no time, it all happens, and no one really knows how it will go, this was exactly how it was with MMT’s production of The Mikado at The Savoy Theatre, a few setbacks then it all suddenly happened The Gentlemen of Japan singing heartily arrived, and an astonishing success was created!!
With it’s well cast production and a pace that kept the audience totally involved it could not go wrong. I have seen several productions and performed in The Mikado and yet have hardly ever seen a more entertaining G and S, it was special.
Back stage and technical created the authentic Japanese scenes well done SM Tony Wells and team, Coolie hats for the backstage crew would have enhanced Costumes, wigs, props very well done, Jenny Weston and Judith Rossiter
Meriwether Maturin as Nanki-Poo, set the scene with brilliant expressions and a lively interpretation.
The whole cast worked together and were excellent. A delightful performance from Christine Borg as Yum -Yum with her golden voice filling the theatre with joy and a pair of lovely maids Pitti- Sing the talented Rhian Hathaway and Peep-Bo a charming Keri Russell a superb trio!
Adrian Bevan, really at home in his role as Pooh-Bah, his fantastic diction and presentation of this important role was so expressively commanding.
Haydn Holder gave a good characterisation of the role of Pish Tush.
Once in a while a performance surprises and this was the case with David Harris who gave us a Ko-Ko to die for ,taking the stage by storm, his energy, what a performance!! David skilfully drew every thing from the G and S humour. Gilbert and Sullivan would have been so proud of him !
A delightfully fierce and superbly sung Katisha form Dominique Walker lit up the stage and great interaction with Ko-Ko in Tit Willow and a wonderful Alone and yet Alive and The Bellow of the Blast! Her lit auditorium entrance was a nice touch !
The Mikado was very well played by Stuart Robinson his outstanding stage presence and gorgeous sadistic giggle and ‘unusual’ amusing head dress gave this role the regal presence it deserved .
Congratulations Director Adrian Bevan, Ruth Friend MD and Band and Helen Stidolph Accompanist Repetiteur. and Rachel Hobby Pianist.
The beautiful singing and moves of the Chorus enhanced and completed a fabulous success for Monmouth Music Theatre.
Thank you from us both for your kind hospitality and warm welcome
