Lilies on the Land
Shinfield Players Theatre, SPT
This production was village theatre at its best and there is nothing derogatory about that statement. There was a great buzz in the charming venue, lots of the audience seemed to know each other, and the performers, and there was a supportive atmosphere. With good music, strong and clear singing from the principals, a tuneful chorus and many laughs, this was a super show. A traditional Japanese setting but then a circus theme was overlaid. This led to interesting set design, costumes, circus tricks and lyrics. The updating of the patter song lyrics was well done. A small band nevertheless covered the many changes of musical theme, which Sullivan set for this operetta, very well.
