The Penelopiad
Sinodun Players, The Corn Exchange, Wallingford
Argosy Players chose to set their production of "The Merchant of Venice" in the 1950s. This allowed for some colourful costumes and a delightful Italian piazza set. However the racial and anti-semitic undertones of the play - even in this edited version by Steve Gooch - really belong back in the sixteenth century. The talented cast coped well with Shakespeare's dialogue and the diction was generally good. It was nice to see so many young people on stage. There was some cross gender casting that we accept in Shakespeare without question and indeed it worked well here.
