One of the joys of being a NODA rep is that every now and again I get to see a gem of a show. Usually something previously unknown to me that someone has discovered and had the courage to bring the production to a new audience. The Long Road by Shelagh Stephenson was such a gem, beautifully portrayed by a team wanting to deliver this challenging subject matter with respect and sensitivity.

The play tackles the process of restorative justice through the experience of Mary the mother of a murdered son and brother. Numbed and worn out by the sudden loss of her son, Mary decides she would meet her son’s convicted killer, a likeable young women called Emma.

The most notable aspect of this exquisitely directed play was the naturalistic style that was delivered by all the actors. At times the words were delivered as if in a TV documentary or extended news item. The characters involved the audience, making us feel the grief more than just observing it.

This was a thought-provoking play that and would have stimulated discussions. The production, acting and direction were of top quality resulting in a performance that the audience will remember.
