Thank you for inviting me to see the latest production Disney...The Little Mermaid JR from Winscombe Youth Theatre.
Set on stage and on the floor of the school arts theatre, the attention to detail to ensure that most of the time the story appeared to be under water was terrific. When on stage the artful flourishing of two coloured cloths simulated the surf beautifully and lighting helped when ‘the weather became stormy’. The bottom of the ocean was depicted with artfully place rocks. A well built boat which moved realistically brought the ‘humans’ to the ocean with good effect. The story is well known to many children from the Disney film, but to me (an aging granny, the story was fresh from reading the stories of Hans Christian Anderson in my childhood. WYT is interesting because of its wide age range and the production team had worked hard with talented children to bring this modern show with its complex music to life.
There were some excellent performances most notably Ursula the Sea Witch who commanded the action every time she appeared. Flounder, who I loved, was small, confident and talented. Ariel the Little Mermaid sang beautifully. For me the ‘stars’ of the show were the underwater creatures, sharks, other fish, electric eels and amazing jelly fish. The children with the ‘creatures’ and the understated use of UV lighting were outstanding! All the children worked with enthusiasm, understanding and speed ensuring the pace of the show was excellent.
The whole cast acquitted themselves very well, with much fun, humour, good singing and movement. The immediate production team commented to me about the difficulties and stress during rehearsal with complex music and young children, I can honestly say all your hard work paid off with a most pleasurable and engaging show.
