The Last of the Pelican Daughters is a fascinating play crafted by The Wardrobe Ensemble in 2019. It was brought to the Lopping Hall stage and showcased LADS’ ambition and versatility. The play brings its challenges for cast, production and perhaps the audience but at its heart is a familiar exploration of life in a large family and the complexities of different personalities.
As they come together shortly after the death of their mother, the relationships between the Pelican daughters brings their own strains but the siblings love and care for each other keeps finding its way through. Boyfriends and husbands add other dimensions as well as the wayward brother who turns up half way through. The echoes of the music that the family grew up with provided a soundtrack to their lives as well as the projected photos and facts that showed the audience through the recent past.
This was a well-acted, designed and directored play that LADS performed exceptionally and I recommend it for any drama company wanting to push its own boundaries and that of its audience.
