Thank you for your kind invitation to report on your production of "The Last 50 Years", your compilation of songs from 50 years of shows. The summary of shows that the group has performed over that period reads as an index of good musical theatre. This promised to be an evening of great music!
This compilation worked extremely well, partly because of the unusual twist of twice looking at the changes in style of performance - and in the perils of hall booking - over that period. The arrangement also demonstrated the versatility of the cast in playing various parts to very good effect. The planning of the show was clear in the slick presentation and fast costume changes, while it was a real pleasure to just sit back and enjoy some thoroughly good music well sung and presented. I really enjoyed the two interludes, one in each Act, that contrasted booking a venue and dance styles across 50 years.
Good use was made of the stage area, with very minimal scenery and well selected props. The music was well played, with good energy and variety in tone and tempo. The sound for the show was very well organised. Lighting worked well in changing the focus onstage. Costumes and makeup were bright and cheerful, and fitted the show selections well.
The Direction was really nicely varied, with cast members playing various roles in quick succession. The Choreography was creative and very well performed. It was excellent to see the improvement in dance moves in the short time that I have visited the group. Timings were very slick and precision in moves was excellent.
It must have difficult to choose between the songs in some shows. However, the mix was delightful, with a good variety of material very well performed. Indeed, there were so many good performances that I feel unable to comment fully for fear of repeating 'excellent' too many times. You have some excellent singers, good dancers and very good character actors in the Society.
This was an evening of thoroughly enjoyable memories given a new twist by this inventive company. Congratulations! It was much appreciated by the audience and sets you up well for the next 50 years.
