W.W.R.T.C. returned to an old favourite The King and I, much loved and performed by many musical theatre societies and this production was indeed a most enjoyable one with so many well known numbers for the audience to enjoy. The strong cast headed by Jane Hubert (Anna Leonowens) and Ian Fryer (The King) both very experienced performers combined well with each other both giving fine performances. Travis Clark (Louis Leonowens) is just a natural on stage with a fine stage presence and super singing and fine diction and was well supported by Marcus Bagley-Hodkin (Prince Chulalongkorn) who also performed his numbers in fine style. Ruth Lockwood (Lady Thiang) was a very fine proud 1st wife with some charming acting and excellent singing. Alex Wilkins (Kralaholme) played this role in great style never letting the stiff austere manner falter. Matt Roberts (Lun Tha) acted well but did find the vocal numbers difficult as did Lisa Hambleton (Tuptim) she had the hardest song to perform but was a fine narrator for the ballet Small House of Uncle Thomas. The stage sets were superb and I loved the planking effect on the stage floor for the opening scene and then the change to the marbled effect for the palace what a great idea. A fine orchestra and brilliant choreography greatly enhanced this colourful production.
