This production was a visual feast from the start. The busy lively dock of Bangkok set the theme beautifully, Anna and her sweet son Louis totally fish out of water in a strange land with the cultural differences being drawn early through attention to detail and good ensemble work. This King of Siam did not attempt to copy the immortalised portrayal of Yul Brynner which was refreshing. He dominated the stage as any king should, creating his role sensitively and with his own regal style. Anna graced the stage with Victorian elegance slowly falling for the Kings charms and developing a strong bond with his lovely family. Lady Thiang sang beautiful and also showed regal elegance. The love story of Tuptim and Lun Tha was not as passionate as seen in the past but there was a loving rapport. Tuptim sang and moved well and she led the company through Uncle Tom’s Cabin with skill. The young dancers showed style in their piece and Angel George in particular caught the eye with her beautiful poise. There were no weak links in this production and the company can be justifiably proud of their achievement.
