The Musical was based on Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel and Disney’s animated movie released in 1996,with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and music by Alan Menken. It follows the story of Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell ringer of Notre Dame.

Ashley had stripped the set back to the bare minimum with steps either side of the stage and a moving scaffold gantry which was used to good effect at the rear. I thought this was really effective with a clever use of rear projections.

The entire production could only be complimented on its quality both vocally and on the acting side. I really think SAOS achieved another level with this production. The harmonies and singing of all cast members and ensemble was amazing and a huge congratulations to the Musical Director Danni Gravell on what she achieved.

The lighting design was extremely clever and complimented all the action on stage. There were some issues with the radio microphones on the evening I saw the show but this did not  detract from the quality of the production.

Costumes were really effective and I loved the Gargoyle Heads and the way they were used by the storytellers, all well played by Leah Collett, Hayley Jones,Sally David,Emma Kennedy,Ewan Forrest, Susanna Power, Simon John and Ben Smith.

The supporting roles of Jehan, Florika,Father Dupin, King Louis XI and Saint Aphrodisius were nicely played by Callum Aspland, Emma Kennedy, Ben Smith, Gareth Northcote-Rees and Ewan Forrest,

The role of Clopin the King of the Gypsies was played by Connor Edwards who gave a good performance filled with energy.

Gareth Iwan Morgan took on the role of Captain Phoebus de Martin head of the palace guards and one of a trio in love with the Gypsy girl Esmerelda. Gareth gave a strong performance which I really enjoyed.

Esmerelda was played by Sarah Clatworthy who definitely showed her talent both vocally and in dance in this role. I really liked the duet Someday with Gareth. Well done Sarah on another powerful performance.

The evil Claude Frollo was played with suitable menace by Dale Gravell. Dale set an imposing figure on stage with some powerful vocals especially Hellfire. This has to be one of the strongest performances I have seen by this actor.

Finally the role of Quasimodo was played by Joseph Giblin and all I can say about this performance is Wow. It was a fantastic performance by this actor with some amazing vocals.

I Loved Out There and Heaven’s Light but the Finale left many people without a dry eye in the auditorium.

The performance of all on stage definitely warranted the standing ovation they received on the evening I watched the performance.

Congratulations Swansea Amateur OperaticSociety on a truly professional quality production.
