Based on the classic mystery by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES sees the famous private detective Sherlock Holmes and his incomparable sidekick Dr Watson as they journey from London to the Devonshire moors to solve the mystery of a legendary supernatural hound who stalks the moors at night, killing members of the wealthy Baskerville family. Holmes and Watson invite the family and neighbours into Baskerville Hall to share their far-fetched tale and poke fun at the mystery and melodrama of the moor.
Set: A perfectly designed set (Steve Lukas) and to period, looked as if it was built to last. Very nice props all workable and in period. Sound and lighting: Marie Kerrigan and Jesse Cooper were also spot on.
Cast: Sherlock Holms (Andrew Robinson) is the smartest (suit) and youngest Sherlock I have ever seen, and boy did he take this part and make it his own. hHs acting ability was superb, with perfect diction and projection. The older Dr Watson (Peter Stevens) was suitably teamed with him and gave us a solid performance. Lady Agatha Mortimer (Ulli Lucas) gave a very regal performance, looking and acting to match. I liked Martin Beaman's characterisation of Barrymore, just like a butler should be. His wife, Mrs Barrymore (Doreen Clark), was equally teamed with him. Perkins (Beth Paice) - this young lady was a joy to watch, jolly, and funny, perfectly silly like a maid should be, keep it up Laura. Supporting cast members (Ben Talbot, Maxine Ledger, Wendy Wilson and Steve Lukas) were all well chosen by Carol to make this play flow nicely.
With the theatrical experience of Carole Ore as director, this Baskervilles was directed to a high standard. I could tell Carole had put a lot of thought into choosing her cast. We got the feeling of being on the moors, and involved in the plot of the play. I have one gripe: Andrew, if you put a pipe in the ashtray take it off with you, as it was mentioned you were outside smoking it.. Sorry. My evil eye caught it.
