The Penelopiad
Sinodun Players, The Corn Exchange, Wallingford
In this adaptation of a radio play which jokily deconstructed the Holmes/Watson myth, Argosy's scenic team amazingly represented the many locations required, and with a stroke of genius showed Dartmoor (with superb mist effects) and the Hound (not normally seen) in the theatre's orchestra pit - both hilarious and scary. The comedy of portraying Watson as a near moron didn't fully work, though the novelty of Holmes's direction of the investigation by thought transference (from the forestage) was well played and avoided his long absence offstage in other versions.
