The Penelopiad
Sinodun Players, The Corn Exchange, Wallingford
A rather dysfunctional family assemble to celebrate the 21st birthday of Andy, the severely disabled son at the centre of the whole family dynamic. Family dynamics is a fairly common premise but one that still offers the opportunity to explore human relationships and interactions. The added factor of a severely disabled member only added to things. This play explored the situations and attitudes of all those involved with some serious and at times disturbing undertones throughout. The playwright Rory Kinnear openly drew on personal experiences with his disabled sister to help give the play real poignancy.
