Lilies on the Land
Shinfield Players Theatre, SPT
Updated to 1950 this inventive production, sponsored partly by makers of reproduction clothing of that period which gave extra style to Act 2, made full use of the opportunities with Don Alhambra turned into a Mafia boss, the happy couples arriving on Vespas and Barataria somewhere on one of the Costas with the stage full of sunbathers. The Plaza-Toro party were particularly strongly played, and Gilbert’s satire didn’t seem to need alteration to fit well into that period.
