Many thanks to all at Aldermaston Players for inviting me to join them for this theatre supper production of The Ghost Train. As always, I was made to feel very welcome by the Front of House Team and joined a friendly bunch at my table.

Together the cast and director produced a nicely balanced narrative with well-played characters who had developed good rapport with each other. It had been extremely well cast with some very strong performances. The cast worked very well together and were all totally invested in the play. The director kept the tension throughout the play, delivering the end twist and character transformation well-hidden until the dramatic reveal in act three. Her vision for the play took us back to the 1920’s and there was an authentic period feel to the production.

The stage was well lit, and I loved the clever use of lighting behind the back windows, especially the way they lit up as the train was approaching and travelling through the station. This, together with the sound effects, definitely depicted the genuine impression of a steam locomotive. From the moment the curtains parted we were presented with a splendidly realistic looking set for the waiting room of the remote rural railway station in Cornwall. The costumes were excellent with a lot of attention to detail bringing out a great sense of 1920’ English fashion.

The Ghost Train was a new play to me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, good characters, lots of intrigue and suspense and a neat twist at the end. All in all, I had a lovely meal, an interesting play to watch and good company, what more could I want for an evening out. Well done to the cast, production team and catering team.
