I come from a family of Sheffield Steel workers, my Father was one of the thousands of men who were made redundant in the 1980’s. The original film of The Full Monty will always hold a big place in my heart because it brings back so many wonderful memories. Therefore I find it difficult to understand why the musical version was Americanised without a complete rewrite, because in my opinion, South Yorkshire humour does not work in an American accent.
Despite my misgivings this BBLOC production of was absolutely superb. On opening night the theatre was bussing with excitement and as the show progressed, many of the female members of the capacity audience shrieked with delight at the slightest sight male flesh.
The high light of the show is of course when the boys deliver “The Full Monty” in the grand finale and storyline follows the trials and tribulations as they build up to it.
Great credit must be given to the six stars of this show, who delivered the goods. They were full of confidence and totally believable throughout. Six excellent individual performances but they also had great team work and it appeared as if they loved every minute of the show. There was great support from the other members cast. I particularly thought the characters of Vicki and Georgie were also excellent and the piano player stole every scene she was in.
It was a show full of laughter but it did have a serious side, the funeral scene was certainly very moving, the song ”You Walk With Me” was outstanding of the show, I am sure many in the theatre were fighting back the tears, and I also found the reprise of “You Rule My world” to be very emotional.
Once again, although the orchestra sounded magnificent, it was generally far too loud which meant that in many places the actual lyrics of the songs were inaudible. However, it was still a very enjoyable show and the audience clearly loved it.
