Travelling to Whitstable on a windy rainy evening I certainly wanted something to cheer me up, well I need not have worried I had a blast.!! The Flint Street Nativity is a feel-good festive farce which celebrates the special joy of Christmas through a child’s eyes. I always find adult actors playing kids hilarious anyway. I knew The Lindley Players would prevail in this and they certainly did.
Written by Tim Firth, creator of the hugely successful Calendar Girls, the Flint Street Nativity was first shown in 1999 as a TV Christmas special which featured celebrity comedians as the cast. A play within a play, the show tells the story of Mrs Horrocks’ class of seven-year-olds as they prepare for their annual school nativity. It’s truly a festive comedy about kids – for adults! We were transported to the set of a junior classroom that we all remember well. Penny Cooper's design along with all the properties/sound/lighting/music/stage management were very professional indeed.
Rebecca Strike (Director) took her cast of 11 seasoned actors and moulded them into little brats. Rebecca, this piece of farce was professionally cast and cleverly directed, bringing out the comedy to a high standard and the naughtiness of all of them shone through. They were Lucie Nash, Gemma Conway, Sarah Hinchcliffe, Cheryl Marksford, Stephen Smith, Kevin Ridley, Alison Cook, Ollie Graveson, Dan Coles, Damian Kelly, and Peter Bressington. You were all stars in my eyes in this Nativity and your audience's too... This show will appeal to teachers, parents, Christmas lovers and those who love to relive their childhood. One thing is for sure, this is one nativity that you won’t want to bring your children to! Thank you, Lindley Players, for a fun filled evening.
