I thoroughly enjoyed this performance, which combined effective drama with lively singing and interesting characterisation. The diction was always clear and well times, although just occasionally lost in the piano accompaniment. The costumes were very good, with Bartolo’s wig being outstanding while the magic scarf trick was lovely. The staging was simple but very effective, with its window and suggested balcony. Many of the staging touches worked extremely well, with a lot of fun being drawn out of the libretto.
Figaro was very strong vocally and had very clear diction - and a most interesting vocal timbre. Count Almaviva engaged in a lot of vocal gymnastics to very good effect. Perhaps a little less speed in the accompaniment would have helped the audience appreciate the libretto. Rosina sang beautifully thoughout the opera, showing excellent technique particularly on the high, soft notes towards the end. Again, her vocal gymnastics were amazing to hear. She and Bartolo had some good repartee, and built an excellent rapport with effective acting while Bartolo’s falsetto singing was most impressive and created yet another side to his character.
In my opinion, every character within the opera was very well played with a deciosive character very well portrayed. The interactions between the characters made this performance very enjoyable. Congratulations to everyone involved – this was a masterpiece of touring theatre!
