The man of the house dies and the widow takes over the building company and increases the profits by 250%. Youngest son tells mum ‘We must be the only builders putting up condemned property’. Mum rules her three sons with rod of iron, keeping them under her thumb whilst making all the decisions. Family revolt when mum arranges a wedding anniversary party (even without dad) the family starts to revolt.
Jayne Jones gives a superb performance as the formidable mother, completely changing her point of view when she feels it necessary. This role is so dependent on timing and delivery and Jayne had these abilities in abundance. An outstanding lead role seems to bring out the best in the other cast members and this was certainly true in this production.
The other cast members, James Owen – Tom, Vicky Slater – Shirley, Geoff Edkins – Henry, Derek Owen – Terry and Sue Buckley – Karen, all contributed in making this a very enjoyable evening, together with a very detailed and well constructed set, coupled with David Huxley’s exceptional direction
