Based on Kenneth Graham’s Wind in the Willows, this musical adaptation by Piers Chater-Robinson was sure to be a winner. Beautifully directed – this musical pulled on the heartstrings of the audience as Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Mr Toad together with a hoard of wonderful Riverside animals strutted their stuff. Chorus animals included. Red and grey squirrels, morris dancing rabbits, hedgehogs, mice, otters, a tortoise and a hare, moles, the appearance of little grey rabbit and of course the dancing ducks. One could tell much research had been made into costume and scenery design, including the fab car, which certainly paid off. Make-up and hairstyles were absolutely spot on for each character, and the Team must be congratulated.

The Director made full use of the space available, which accommodated the large cast. The individual roles were perfectly cast and I cannot praise highly enough the portrayal of Mr Toad by Andrew Bond. The moment he entered the stage he revelled in his performance. His mannerisms, facial expressions and the way he took the role by the scruff of the neck was unbelieveable. Super characterization! Other creditable performances were Jodie Breakwell as Mole, Jane Breeze as Rat and a first class portrayal of Badger from Mike Clarke whose stagecraft and experience was evident throughout. Dave Robinson gave us a chilling performance as Chief Weasel with his high pitched group of teddy boy dressed Weasels. He led the ‘baddies’ in a great number – ‘Weasels Reign’ The performance from Cassie Boxall as Rosy – the Jailor’s daughter almost stole the show for me. What a talented youngster – one to watch, lovely duet with Toad in the Act 2 – well done!

This musical, which attracted many families to the theatre had that ‘feel good factor’ and was certainly well received by the enthusiastic audience.
